To be the best in football, it takes more than just practicing football drills.
It’s always about the kids first. Be selective. Look for competitors and ‘footballers’, not just athletes with ‘potential’. It’s easy to get mesmerized by the size and early growth spurts. This is a marathon, not a sprint. And it’s also football, not a sprint.
There is no one way to develop players, but you need to put together a technical program and stick with it. And, that training program has to be delivered by coaches who can connect with the kids, deliver a lesson with conviction and energy, and who are first and foremost, ‘professional’. Don’t get blinded by certificates and diplomas. Football education is important, but courses and badges don’t do the coaching.
Creating a competitive training environment where every player is both challenged and encouraged to take risks every single day, is vital to their development. That means putting your players in the right groups and evaluating them on a regular basis. Age groups, sessions and drills need to be fluid and a fit for every player, so they’re learning from and pushing each other every time they’re on the pitch.
“Good try” does not produce world-class footballers. Once players hit 13 years of age, they need to be battling promotion and relegation and getting knocked around every week. Being able to perform in high-pressure situations is what separates the kids who really want it, from the ones who don’t.
